“Jump In”

This piece was commissioned by Anna Asbury for her Husband, Cory. It was a surprise for his 40th birthday. The entire piece is made from an acoustic guitar that Cory gave Anna when they were only dating as teenagers.

As I worked through design ideas I kept having a vision of a dock jutting out into a body of water. As I sat with this vision it began to animate. At first I saw fingers playing on a fretboard. Then the fingers became children’s feet running down the fretboard which had now transformed into a dock. Then I just had this general impression - Jump In. The whole vision felt like an invasion back to childlike purity and joy.

After I shared this design and concept with Anna, she informed me that the vision I had seen looked an awful lot like where Cory grew up in the North Carolina mountains! On top of that, I had no idea that at that time Cory was going through a bit of a personal renaissance and was feeling the call to leave the country music scene and go back to where it all started - writing worship music.

Life has a way of making us calloused and cynical. This piece is meant to be a visual reminder and invitation to run down the docks and jump back into to childlikeness.
