"The Broken Guitar"

Medium: Acoustic guitar, hardwood backboard, custom frame

3’ x 6’

This commissioned piece was created from a single acoustic guitar mounted on a hardwood backboard. No stain was applied to the guitar itself—its varying tones were achieved by carefully sanding to different depths of the wood ply, revealing the natural beauty and texture of the instrument.

The guitar was given to its owner by her father when she moved to Nashville at 18 to pursue music. Over the years, life unfolded in unexpected ways. She never learned to play the guitar, and it quietly collected dust as her path led her toward marriage, children, and a life far richer in fruitfulness than chasing stardom could have offered.

During the creation of this piece, one sentence came clearly to my spirit: “The broken guitar is the broken jar.” I was immediately reminded of Mary’s act of devotion in John 12, and that reflection shaped the artwork. A poem was written to accompany the piece, celebrating the journey of a life surrendered to God’s guidance, where brokenness becomes beauty and quiet instruments of the past hold new meaning for the present.

The Broken Guitar is a testament to the unseen paths God guides us on, showing how He transforms ordinary moments, broken pieces, and deferred dreams into offerings of devotion, gratitude, and grace.
