The family first reached out because their home held a vast, purpose-built space—a 9’ x 9’ art wall in the foyer that felt too significant to leave undecided. They invited me to imagine a work created specifically for their family and for that place.

When we met, I presented three distinctly different concepts. I felt confident about the first two. The third, though more unconventional, stirred something deeper in me. When I turned the page of my sketchbook and revealed the shape of lungs, they immediately said, “That’s it.” I was stunned.

They began sharing images saved on their phones—light forming the shape of lungs, paired with scriptures about breath, breathing, and the breath of God. Their youngest son had been born prematurely, and one of his greatest challenges was the growth and development of his lungs. In that moment, it was clear the piece had already found its form.

As the work unfolded, a phrase surfaced quietly in my spirit: “lungs laced in light and laughter.” I imagined God building his longs by laughing into them. The child’s name is John Isaac—Isaac meaning “son of laughter.”

One final detail brought everything full circle. The family loves the song “Great Are You Lord” by All Sons & Daughters, especially the line, “It’s Your breath in our lungs”—a lyric that echoes their son’s journey.

The lungs within the piece are filled with Scripture, a reminder that all Scripture is God-breathed—His breath in our lungs, sustaining life, hope, and praise.
